Collagen is the main constituent molecule of our tissues. It accounts for more than 85% of them. It is what is known as a “macromolecule,” meaning that it is itself made up of other molecules called peptides.

The main difference between collagen and peptides is therefore their size and molecular weight. Collagen is a “large” molecule that will have great difficulty crossing the intestinal barrier and thus being of any use to your body. Peptides, on the other hand, are very small molecules—150 times smaller than collagen—and are able to pass through the intestinal barrier and reach the areas that need them. Thus, within the body, peptides serve a dual purpose:

– Stimulating fibroblasts—the cells responsible for collagen formation—to prompt them to resume collagen production.

– Providing fibroblasts with the raw material needed to produce this new collagen.

The molecular weight of collagen peptides is crucial because it affects how the body absorbs them. The lower the molecular weight, the greater their bioavailability—and thus the better they are absorbed by the body. Our collagen peptides have a molecular weight of just 2,000 Daltons.

This is the lowest molecular weight currently available for collagen peptides, regardless of the form chosen.

There are three main sources of collagen peptides today: porcine collagen, bovine collagen and marine collagen.
